About The Bells of Glocken

Instead of a traditional telling of the Christmas story, this year’s musical will highlight Advent and Epiphany themes. In this delightful tale, the tiny kingdom of Glocken has a noble and good king who bestows on his people a great tower with four beautiful bells hanging high in its rafters; one for hope, one for peace, one for love, and one for joy.  The king asks the people to ring the bells if they feel hopeless, despair, anger or sorrow, and he will send someone to their aid.  He also promises that after he dies, a tiny Child will come who will be a great new King, and He will bring them salvation.

After the good king’s death, the people become frightened and angry.  They quarrel amongst themselves, ringing the bells incessantly until the ropes disintegrate and the great tower falls silent.  Dark years pass, and the people long for a new king.

Late one night, three Wise Men from the East appear at the kingdom gate, announcing that they had read a prophecy are following a star in search of a new king.  Gradually, the bells begin to toll on their own, first one then another, and the people are filled with a renewed hope for the promised king.  They join the growing caravan in a great search, and ultimately find the baby Jesus, their newborn King.  The Wise Men and followers herald the fulfillment of the prophecy made so long ago, and the tiny kingdom resounds with the glad news of the birth of Jesus, the King of kings.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.  Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given.  His authority and peace will be everlasting, over the throne of David and his Kingdom.”     -Isaiah 9: 2, 6-7

Our children have been diligently preparing this musical for Sunday’s worship service, and are very excited to share it with you.  Join them on their journey to Bethlehem, and prepare to be inspired by our children’s joy and energy in sharing the good news of Christ’s birth.
