This Sunday, January 14 in Worship
“A Story of Abundance”
Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday
Rev. Libby Tigner, Guest Preacher
This weekend we pause to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and renew our own dreams of a nation in which people are judged by the content of their character and all are treated as beloved children of God.  Our liturgy and prayers will echo some of Dr. King’s prophetic words.  We’ll approach the scriptural text through the lens of King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and perhaps find ways to infuse our living with generosity instead of fear.
Sunday’s worship service will be our first Special Music Sunday of the New Year, featuring some of Dr. King’s favorite spirituals and honoring Civil Rights efforts.  Our opening hymn, Lift Every Voice and Sing has been called the Black National Anthem and has been prominently featured in the Civil Rights Movement.  We’ll also remember Dr. King’s gospel roots in our second hymn, Just a Closer Walk with Thee.  We’ll also offer the spirituals We Shall Overcome and Walk in the Light (Jesus Light of the World).  There is a Balm in Gilead and Deep River will highlight our soloists Shannon Miller, soprano and Michael Rice, bass. This Sunday promises to be a rousing morning of song, so be sure to come and join us in person or via YouTube streaming!
